Not Your Pain in the Neck

Dear Doctors, Nurses, ER Staff, Friends, and Family,

I am a 52 year-old migraneur who suffered my first migraine at the age of 21. Over the last thirty years, the headaches have become more severe, more frequent, and, if untreated, more incapacitating. The only time during this period that I have been headache-free has been during my three pregnancies, certainly not a viable solution, and yes, doctors and specialists have explored hormone therapy to no avail. I have seen several neurologists, undergone many CT and MRI scans, had allergy testing and thorough blood work-ups. I have practiced mindfulness meditation, visualization meditation, and biofeedback. I have received massage therapy and chiropractic treatment.

Working with various physicians and said neurologists, I have been prescribed a wide variety of prescription analgesics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antihistamines, decongestants, anti-inflammatories, benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, phenothiazines, steroids, triptans, and other prescriptions medications. None eliminated my headaches and after all these years only a few have me able to carry on with my daily routine as much as possible in the face of daily pain.

When I have a migraine that spirals out of control - meaning the pain cannot be controlled by the medication I have available to me at home - I have to go the hospital emergency room for treatment. One of the questions I am asked is to rate my pain on a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the worst pain ever. I reserve 10 for childbirth, live daily usually at no lower than a 4, and head to the ER when I hit an 8. Until the last few months, I have been able to control the migraines and keep these visits to once a quarter. Now, whether it is a hormonal change or an organic cause, the migraines are controlling me, and ER visits have escalated to twice a week to manage the pain.

Next week I will be heading to a leading headache clinic where I am hopeful that the multi-disciplinary team there will finally be able to help me break this cycle and manage an approach that will give me the tools (medicine and lifestyle) when I leave from my extended stay to be, if not headache-free, at least pain-manageable.

However, the last few weeks, as I've been in and out of the ER and dealt with doctors, nurses, ER staff and even my own specialists in follow-up care, I've realized the lack of understanding among many regarding migraines. A migraine is not just a headache. A migraine is not just caused by stress. Loud noises and lights are very distressing to migraine sufferers - nurses and doctors, please take note of this when you talk, open/close doors, use lights in rooms. I can still hear you if you talk softly, and my head won't pound as much nor will my nausea swell should you use your normal or loud voice. A migraneur is not a junkie; I do not want to be in the ER. I wish more than anything that the medicine I had at home had handled the migraine. It didn't. Lecturing me about the dangers of addiction to I.V. analgesics when I am at a pain level 9 is not helpful, especially when you are well aware that I am scheduled to go inpatient at one of the country's top headache clinics in a matter of weeks. On the other hand, while I am open to alternative medicine (and realize the clinic I will be entering embraces the best of cutting edge western medicine as well as the healing arts of eastern approaches), again, when I'm at a level 9, please don't share with me that I must get my chakras in balance and find a good Reikist (as supposedly learned from Wayne Dyer and Tony Robbins while visiting on Fiji), just give me the meds I need to break through the migraine.

Realizing that a migraine is not caused by stress, stress can be and often is a trigger for migraines. That being said, I understand that no life can be stress-free, and working on stress management will undoubtedly be a priority - and recognizing stress triggers - during my stay at the headache clinic. I expect life will be different when I return. I hope life will be different when return. I hope life will be better when I return, and I hope my family and friends will be patient with me.

I, as a part of five generations of wonderful women, am so very blessed this December to be celebrating my grandmother's 100th birthday. Gram has always been known for her incredible holiday baking. One of our family favorites among her famous cookie collection (Sea World Orlando even asked to use her cookie recipes when they opened their Florida Festival exposition) are her Candy Bar Brownies. Here is the recipe first in her hand writing and then printed below.

Candy Bar Brownies

2 chocolate covered Mounds Bars - 4 sections

1/2 c. shortening 1 c. flour

1 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt

2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 c. chopped walnuts (optional)

In a large saucepan melt candy bars & shortening over low heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add remaining ingredients and blend well.

Spread in greased 9" square pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes. While warm, cut in bars.

HIGHWAYS & BYWAYS, PART 2 - Finding Gomer, via Mayberry

After the disappointing visit to the Lincoln Ridge Pumpkin and Mum Fall Festival, we ventured on in search of Gomer and a traveling Welsh exhibit ~ only stopping in twelve towns across the country. With Kevin definitely having Welsh ancestry and me being fairly confident of some (still working on that side of the family tree but with my maiden name, I'm thinking, good grief, there's got to be some Welsh blood in there somewhere!), we were very curious to see the exihibit. Neither of us having heard of Gomer (oh gee, ya' think??), we did a little online research before our trip and learned that the very small community (just slightly over 200 folk) is home to the Wales-Ohio project, including a museum with incredible resources and interesting events (although it's not open in January, February, and March because "it's just too cold and nobody shows up").

Of course, the first challenge was to actually find Gomer. I mean, in northwest Ohio, there are a lot of places a town of 200 can hide. Having taken a cursory look at Mapquest, we were convinced that surely we could find Gomer Road (obviously the ONLY road that would lead to the "promised land") somewhere along SR 30 so that's the direction we headed. We didn't find it. We did find Mayberry Road and were greatly tempted to follow that....hmmm....but a few u-turns and finally a stop at a nearby Speedway where there was a great debate among those in attendance, we had the directions we needed to Gomer.

The Welsh in America exhibit was being hosted by the Gomer U.C.C. and at the time we arrived was well attended. In the center of the room were 6 two-sided topical banners telling the story, the history of the Welsh in America, and for us, it was fascinating to feel so connected to this story. There were some things that we knew, but much we learned. We now know that Ellis Island was named for a Welshman, Samuel Ellis, who had a tavern on the island, and that the phrase, "keeping up with the Joneses" arose out of 19th century New York when a wealthy Welsh couple named Jones kept improving their estate and their neighbors kept trying to do the same. We also learned that the Welsh came to America bringing their ideas of equal rights, free speech, and non-conformity (yay!).

Surrounding the room were items from the Gomer Welsh Museum and hostesses served us (frequently!) Welsh treats which we enjoyed greatly (and picked up some recipes for a few) - Welsh cakes, imported Welsh cheese, scones. Yes, our trip to Gomer was definitely the "win" for the day.

Despite the treats we enjoyed at the Welsh exhibit, we had planned to wrap up our day with a visit to Landeck, home of Keith's Tavern and its "World Famous Fried Chicken." More country roads, more bean fields, and more trees showing their autumn colors and we pulled into Landeck, passing Kill Road just inside the town limits ~ I commented, "Who would want to live on 'Kill Road'?" We found Keith's Tavern easily ~ I know, I know, it's not like Gomer and Landeck make it hard on us :) ~ and were seated, fortunately, just before what we are guessing Sunday early evening mass had let out as the place filled almost to capacity about ten minutes after we arrived.

We both ordered the fried chicken and were happy to be seated under the big screen TV so we could get the news that the Rays had clinched first place in the ALC East. It also helped to pass the time, and I do mean time, that we had to wait for our meal. Now, maybe someone can comment on here and tell me that "home-fried" chicken takes twenty to twenty-five minutes to prepare...I don't know. That's why I don't run a restaurant. But I have had "home-fried" chicken at other places that was served in a considerably shorter time. That being noted, I do need to say that the chicken I had at Keith's was great, and yes, I licked my fingers when I was done. So a definite "thumbs up" on the chicken....but the sides, well, let's just say, next time I'll order a four-piece chicken and skip the sides completely. I had mashed potatoes (pretty sure they were homemade but they were "gummy") and anytime I get coleslaw served in the little plastic container with the cover...well, I just don't go there. Rolls? Call me cynical but I'm guessing GFS. So, our trip to Keith's in Landeck ended up as a "bye."

All in all, not too bad a day for a Sunday Highways and Byways....stay tuned :)

HIGHWAYS & BYWAYS - A Win, Loss, and Bye

Yesterday was our Sunday drive ~ a chilly, windy fall afternoon, but perfect for exploring the highways and byways of NW Ohio and eventually NE Indiana as more Sundays come our way. We had three destinations in mind - the Lincoln Ridge Pumpkin and Mum Festival, Gomer for the traveling Welsh exhibit, and finally, Landeck to try Keith's Tavern's "world famous" fried chicken.

First stop - Lincoln Ridge where we had our "loss" of the day (financially and event-wise). We had read about this festival on the Ohio Tourism site where we were looking forward to "a hay ride. Go(ing) out into the field and pick(ing our) own pumpkin, just the right one...Have you ever been through a corn tunnel? Here will be the opportunity to do this and tell all your friends about it. You can participate in the straw stack, a goat boardwalk and sit back and enjoy the bonfire to warm you up while you enjoy some delicious food."

Now we are not so naive to believe that all of these "goodies" would be free, but the Ohio Tourism site lists the event itself as "free admission" so you can imagine our surprise when we pulled in the drive to be met by an imposing cowboy-hatted gentlemen you looked us up and down and then said, "It'll be $15.00 for your carload." So stunned, in fact, that, yes, we just handed over the money, no questions asked :/ I know, I know -- we should have put the car in reverse or inquired what was under the hat....but obviously we were under the total false advertisement hypnotic spell and simply handed Mr. Lincoln Ridge $15.00 as Kevin whispered "Oh, s..."

Trying to think the best, we parked the car and ventured out among the activities, hoping that the purple jack-o-lantern wrist bands we had been gifted with would, indeed, entitle us to free food, free pumpkins, free fun for all.....not....food was for sale. Pumpkins were 30 cents a pound (I raised and sold pumpkins in a prior life - they weigh a LOT!). However, there, was one freebie that we got to enjoy (worth the $15? I'll let you decide). When we had the Pumpkin Patch, Dad alway "dreamed" (or joked, lol) about having a pumpkin catapult -- here's the "Punkin Chunkin" we got to experience at Lincoln Ridge -- all $15 worth of it :)

Check in tomorrow as things improved greatly when we found Gomer (yep, Gomer!) and finished up with supper at Landeck.

MONDAY BLUES? HAVE A CUPCAKE!

First really chilly and rainy day of fall here ~ and of course, a Monday, to beat....but no blues, okay? New cure for the Monday (or Tuesday, Wednesday, ....you get the idea...) blahs is to try a glass (ok, maybe 2) of vino from Cupcake Vineyards of the Central Coast, California.

We first tried this favorite while in SW Florida on our honeymoon in June and loved the smoothness of the Chardonnay. Now, you need to understand our "skilled" expertise at selecting wines....first, we look within the price range we are willing and able to buy (just being honest, here, right?!); second, we look for a label that catches our eye - that's the fun part - labels can be so creative; then, finally, we check the size of the punt, having heard "through the grapevine" (ha, ha, ha!) that a good punt means a better wine ~ we have no idea as to the factual basis of that but we like thinking that at least one of our criteria sounds like we know what we're talking about (especially when we tell people we pick our wine by the label!) :)

But, seriously, this little treat has been a special one for us ~ we've had a hard time finding it back here at home. We were able to find other Cupcake Vineyard varieties ~ Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot ~ but not the Chardonnay, even checking our best "go-to" places (Cupcake Vineyard DOES ship, but not to our state). I was thrilled when I discovered two bottles when shopping in my daughter's college town ~ and yes, I bought them both :)

List price for the Cupcake Chardonnay is $12.00 ~ I was able to pick up our last two bottles for $9.99. Icing on the cake :)

Being the Water

It has been a month ~ a year ~ of incredible changes...deep life changes for me and those that I love. I have been so very blessed to discover my life and love partner and celebrate our new journey with our family around in us in the most intimate, "made for us" wedding. My youngest daughter, so gifted and talented in many areas, has now graduated from high school and is excitedly preparing for her new journey ~ college ~ where a new world awaits to help her discover and develop those gifts and talents even more. I was able to embrace my son after two years away in Africa, home to celebrate all these milestone events with us and share with us the wonder, joy, and challenges of his work with the Peace Corps ~ and understood more fully in my heart that his true home, at least for now, is, indeed, across the ocean, in a village who loves and needs him, in a country he has come to love as well. I am amazed at the miracle of my granddaughter who just, it seems, a twinkling ago, was a babe in arms, and now toddles around, babbling, signing words, and of course, speaking the word that will always melt my heart, "Mimi." :)

I have watched my mother grow stronger each day, rediscovering herself, step-by-step, as she walks now alone after the death of my father ~ such a challenging walk, but such strength she has shown and what new roads may lay ahead?

All of this change, even the most positive and wondrous events, can be head-spinning and heart-stirring. When my son was home, he posted a quote from a Greek philosopher on his Facebook wall ~ "You can never step in the same river twice." Change, good - bad - just change, is inevitable. Nothing remains the same. When I start to feel overwhelmed by the change around me (and yes, even all the good change can become overwhelming....along with graduations and college and weddings and happy sons in Africa and daughters and granddaughters and mothers come planning and more planning and did I say planning and moving and maybe moving and commuting and calendars and vacations and financial planning and....and....so yes, you get the point), I hold on to the phrase "be the water." Just go with the flow - let go - don't try to plant your feet in the sand and stand still against the waves. Just be the water and flow with it.

I think tomorrow afternoon's weather looks good for heading out to the farm to do some floating on the pond.

Now I know that spring does not officially begin for a couple of more weeks, but after the winter that we've endured - and yes, I do mean endured....and with daylight savings time beginning this coming weekend (what is up with that, anyway??), I'm not waiting any longer! Yes, it's time for the home decor change-over - the snowmen are going away and out come the spring pastels, Easter decorations (I mean, it's early this year, so hey, I'll be ready!), flowers, and sunshine all around! Made the short trek to the storage shed to get the needed totes in today's incredible sunshine and unbelievable warmth (we seriously can't remember what 50 degree weather feels like - and yes, I did have my windows open for a while just to breathe the fresh air and enjoy it!).

So begone my once precious snowmen - no more of you will I see until November when I'll once more be ready for white dustings and won't recall this endless gray. Bring on the sun!

Well, it's no secret what I'm giving thanks for today! :) What a shower of blessings my dear granddaughter has been and continues to be every single day ~ I am amazed at how quickly the past year as gone by. It really does seem like just yesterday that I was holding her in my arms, just hours after her birth, my heart filled with overwhelming joy and love. That love and joy grows each day as I see her grow ~ and I celebrate her birthday today knowing that Abigail Elizabeth is a special, wonderful little girl, dearly loved by many. Giving thanks today for those "three little beeps" at the other end of my cell phone -- not too unlike a busy signal on most calls -- but whenever I call my son who is in Tanzania, those "beeps" mean "YES, I've got a connection and he's going to answer!" :) You see, the alternatives -- which for the last several days I've been receiving are silent airtime followed by what we have come to refer to as "funky Tanzanian dance music" and a recording in Kiswahili I clearly don't understand...or the one which really has had me worried this week, silent airtime followed by an actual ringing but then a recording in English informing me that the number I was dialing has been disconnected or changed.

When one's son is half a world a way (with the Peace Corps since June 2008), one really, really is grateful for those "three little beeps" and delayed voice answering, "Hello, Mom? Is that you?" Today was a good day!

One of my "non-resolutions" (yes, I resolved to make no resolutions this year so I wouldn't be breaking any as the months moved on...) this year was to continue actively working on stress management in new and old ways. I suffer from chronic migraine headaches which can often be debilitating and am also finding that my body is beginning to protest more frequently and increasingly. Therefore, I was intrigued by a seminar on "mindfulness" as a means to stress reduction which a friend recommended and that I'm beginning tomorrow for six weeks. As I've already begun the 40-day meditation practice (Winter Feast for the Soul), the work we do in the seminar should be a further step into slowing down, breathing deep, and centering for peace within.

I know that one of the practices I should return to is yoga - I've been an "occasional" yogi-wannabe (??) for a few years and by no means am an expert or even much above a beginner, most likely. But I DO know my favorite pose, lol! Balasana - also known as "Child's Pose" - is the most relaxing, releasing, peaceful, peace-filled pose that I find in yoga. This morning I was moving through some recommended stretches for my protesting lower back muscles and happily ended with an exercise that involved "Child's Pose." Ahh.....yes, now, if I could just stay here....

My grandmother is such a blessing to our family. She is 99 years old ~ her 100th birthday will be celebrated in December of this year ~ and still lives completely on her own. Now, I'll admit, as the last few years have brought her increasing challenges with hearing, sight, mobility, and memory, there are times that our patience is tested as well, but yet we know that it truly is her independent spirit and strength that drives her. And that one day, we will be doing the same to our daughters ~ at least that is the joke we whisper to each other ~ and how wonderful it will be to follow in her footsteps!

Nana claims that daily exercise and healthy eating are an important part of her lifestyle.....as well as her daily 5pm highball (just one!) :) She plays Bingo whenever she can find a game, has a jigsaw puzzle always going in her living room, and never misses church on Sunday (or if she does, you'll hear about it...). She truly is a special woman, the matriarch of five generations now of incredible women in this family. We are blessed, indeed.

If someone has asked me in the last few years about my faith, I have found it difficult to answer. It is a question I have struggled with, stumbled over, avoided when at all possible for very real reasons...those who know my vocation prior to these years sometimes find this odd, even shocking or outright strange, especially if they are unaware of the circumstances surrounding my journey into the desert of doubt. I worked for "the church" and was in ministry in various areas for more than ten years, even attending seminary at one point, determining a call to ordained service. How could I "abandon" this church, question my God, and simply seem to "fall away" from the kingdom of God?

The desert has not been an easy journey. Dry, long, empty at times and quite lonely. Yet through it all I sensed a presence not so much leading me but "with me" as I stepped along and found my way, as long as it took, whatever route I took. I see with new eyes, eyes more open and a heart more full of the incredibly abundant love of our God and knowledge of Her joy and delight in all of us, ALL of us throughout this world. I celebrate quietly that the journey is bringing me peacefully home.

Today I began "Winter Feast for the Soul" ~ a globally organized 40-day spiritual practice period, believing that "A life grounded in daily practice is one that knows inner peace. It is that peace which translates into peace throughout our lives and ultimately to peace and healing for our planet."

The guided meditation schedules provided are available from various faiths and practices and ages to accommodate all. I found great comfort in "coming home" to the Contemplative Prayer model which today used the practice of lectio divina, reminding me in today's message that the kingdom of God is within me. Such powerful words! Throughout that desert journey, indeed, I was not alone, and I had not "fallen away" as the kingdom of God is already here, within me. What peace that brings.

"Being Mimi" is such an incredible journey for me. My first granddaughter (and first grandchild), Abigail, arrived in February of this past year and has had me smiling ever since. :) From the first time her mom, my daughter, placed her in my arms - just hours after her birth - to today's impromptu Monday moments when she pulled up on my jeans and put out her arms to be picked up, nestling her head into my shoulder for a cuddle, I have found that "being Mimi" means priceless smiles, treasured times, and warm memories in the making. My heart is full each and every day with the blessings of this journey.

Ok, yes, I'll admit it, I'm guilty. Completely 100% guilty of blog neglect. I've ignored this thing first for a few days, then a couple of weeks, and before I knew it months, and now a new decade has dawned -- what was I thinking?! :)

So, new year, new decade, time for resolutions and all that, right? Well, at least I can give it my best shot at breathing some new life into the blog world here and see what happens...

Looking back at 2009 ~ becoming Mimi (welcoming my first grandchild!); finding love and saying "yes" (how wonderful to find and share such happiness); road-tripping with my youngest around the country (just call us "Thelma and Louise") for fun, soccer, and college exploration; saying a too-soon 'good-bye' to my remarkable, strong, and so loving father; celebrating my grandmother's 99th birthday (her "secret"? one highball everyday at 5pm)...

Looking ahead to 2010 ~ celebrating Abby's first birthday (my creative daughter has already selected a wonderful theme - "Winter ONE-derland!") ; celebrating "soccer girl's" college commitment (stay tuned - she's close to making an announcement, I think!), her high school graduation, and her travels abroad (Spain this spring, Nicaragua over the summer); planning our "simply" wonderful (key word is "simply") wedding and terrific trip; welcoming my son home from Tanzania for a three week visit before he returns to Africa to extend his work with the Peace Corps...much to look forward to in this new year and in this new decade, indeed.

Lady Monarchs capture sectional soccer title with emotional shootout win over Cardinals

After 110 minutes of regulation and overtime play, Marysville High School girls soccer coach Joe McSwords was left pondering another number .... five.

“We hadn’t practiced it (a shootout) since two-a-days,” said McSwords. “I really wasn’t even sure which five players I wanted to put up for shots.”

That was McSwords’ situation Thursday evening after two full halves and a pair of overtime sessions left the Lady Monarchs and Thomas Worthington stalemated at 0-0 in a Division I sectional final game. While McSwords and his captains were meeting with the officials at center field in Worthington, assistant coaches Neal Shaffer, Allen Hinderer and Katie Tracey were writing down some names.

“Those were the ones I thought,” said McSwords after seeing Taylor Spears, Sam Fisher, Casidy Jaggers, Ashley Wilson and KyLee Tuchfarber on a list of shooters.

That quintet came through in big fashion, as the Lady Monarchs outscored the Cardinals, 4-3, in the shootout to advance to Tuesday’s district semifinal game at Upper Arlington. After regulation play and overtime sessions that featured both teams missing on scoring opportunities, the season basically came down to which shooting lineup and which keeper would persevere. Somebody was going to win and somebody was going to end the campaign empty-handed. Soccer games can finish in ties during the regular season but not so during tournament competition. If two, 15-minute OTs are exhausted and the deadlock still stands, teams go to a shoot-out format. Both teams name five shooters who line up against the opposing keeper. Teams alternate shots. The Cardinals took the first opportunity and Hailey Reeb gave her team a 1-0 lead against MHS keeper Hannah Zacharias.

“It’s definitely a pressure situation,” said Zacharias. “It’s tough when you have to face so many kicking styles.”

Spears lined up her shot against TW keeper Rachel Chizever and tied the game at 1-1.

Rebecca Sheldon ripped the ball in for a 2-1 Cardinal lead and Fisher followed suit to make it a 2-all battle. With tension mounting, Zacharias came up with perhaps one of the biggest plays of the season. Meagan Endsley rifled the ball toward the upper part of the goal but Zacharias swiftly got an arm up to block the offering.

“I felt on top of the world after that,” Zacharias said.

Jaggers’ shot failed to hit the mark, leaving the game tied. Nikki Appel put the Cards ahead 3-2 but Wilson scored for yet another tie. Kristen Taylor was the final Worthington shooter and her effort failed to hit the mark. It appeared as though a second set of shooters would be needed when Tuchfarber’s shot went wide to the left. A whistle blew, though, and an official signaled that Chizever crossed the white line before Tuchfarber took the shot. That’s a no-no in soccer and it gave Tuchfarber another opportunity.

“On my second chance, I felt I had to get the ball to the back of the net,” she said. “I wanted to work it to the back corner on the ground.”

Tuchfarber’s mowing job was better than a Lawnboy and when the ball skipped past Chizever, the Lady Monarchs (9-5-4) had claimed an emotional sectional title.

“This was a huge win,” said McSwords as his eyes watered and his voice cracked. “For the past four years, we’ve been working to put this program on the map and I think this win may do that. The girls worked very hard to win this game.”

Yummy Oatmeal & Friends Across the World

First, let me say that when I logged in today I found the most wonderful comment waiting to be moderated. It was from a former Peace Corps volunteer who had served with Andrew at the neighboring village -- and who had been his best friend and "his sis" for many, many months until she returned stateside this past late spring. She told me that she had been trying unsuccessfully to reach Drew for over a month (he has a new cell phone due to an "incident" in Dar a while back, lol! and she also didn't have his current email addy) and was hoping I would be able to connect them. She found my blog through the spectacular world of internet search and left her email address for me (so, no, Jessica, I won't post your comment, lol!). I'm so very excited to re-connect the old friends, the "brother and sister" back together as I know how much Drew has missed "talking" with her and they have much to catch up on!

Now, on a completely different note....weather has changed here, heading us directly into a chilly fall and the perfect time for this great recipe I just received for "Baked Oatmeal" - a perfect dish to prep the night before and mix together and bake in the morning (and, if you're a "small" crowd, eat off all week long!)

Baked Oatmeal

3/4 c. brown sugar
1 t. salt
1 t. cinnamon
3 1/2 c. old-fashioned oats

2 c. milk
1/2 c. oil (can use all olive oil, all canola, or 1/2 & 1/2)
2 eggs beaten
1/2 c. applesauce
1 t. vanilla

1 fresh apple chopped
1/4 c. chopped dried fruit (cranberries, etc.)
1/2 c. ch. nuts (pecans, walnuts, etc.)

Preheat oven to 375 (350 for glass pan). Mix dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients and stir well. Add fruit and nuts. Pour into greased 9 X 13 inch pan. Bake 25 minutes.

Some more TIPS for this yummy oatmeal:

* Night before prep dry ingredients, wet ingredients (refrigerate), and chopped fruit/nuts except apple (wait til morning to chop apple to prevent turning brown).
* I have tried this with all olive oil and it is good, but a little "heavy" - I'm probably going to do the 1/2 & 1/2 next time.
* An easy way to do the applesauce is if you have snack packs - they are 1/2 c. each :)
* Might be interesting/healthy to try this with egg whites/egg substitutes, too.
* I've been told this can be made with Splenda instead of the brown sugar.
* Makes a great breakfast...as well as a simple supper later in the week, lol!

27 years ago this morning, my oldest daughter, Sarah Elizabeth was born...Goodness, where have the years gone? Years of smiles and laughter, tears and traumas, drama and joy, celebrations and challenges, moments and milestones...it goes so quickly.

Sarah is now a first-time mother herself ~ and a wonderful one, of course, to Abigail Elizabeth, enjoying every blessing and at the same time in awe at how quickly the months are passing. Ah, yes, they do slip by days, months, years...and a little girl now has her own little girl :)

Outside my window...there is a beautiful morning sun already climbing high, a sign that I enjoyed a late morning sleep ;-)

I am thinking...of what a long day yesterday was ~ quite the trek ~ but so much fun watching Hannah "do her stuff" all day and "wow" the coaches :-)...definitely worth the trip!

From the learning room...would love to find time this week to continue working with wire and want to check out the other bead shops I've heard about as well.

From the kitchen...had such fun cooking a great dinner Saturday night after the show.

I am wearing...my pj's and summer robe.

I am creating...with the turquoise necklace and earrings complete, it's time for the bracelet now!

I am going...to make another "soccer Mom" road trip this weekend :-)

I am reading...Conversations with God (II), John Adams, A Year in The World...and lots of magazines :-)

I used to be an elementary school music teacher.
I once broke my leg while in the hospital....riding a food cart while volunteering as a "candy striper" aka "fooling around on the job."
I can sing....well, at least I used to be able to sing....and used to be able to play a fairly mean keyboard and piano. I still enjoy music very much.
I used to be a high school English teacher.
I used to be an office manager, a church music director, a Director of Christian Education, a chief of staff/administrator....how do you spell "career ADD"? :-)
I have no sense of direction ~ seriously. But, it doesn't deter me from finding my way.

Outside my window...a cooler summer evening is rolling in, a welcome break from the heat we've been having.

I am thinking...of Hannah down at her goalie camp and hoping she is having great fun.

From the learning room...more fun to come with the altered pendants and alcohol inks and time to "play" with the turquoise this week.

From the kitchen...it will be a few weeks of learning to cook for one ~ should be interesting!

I am wearing...denim capris and a blue & white striped tee, comfy after my car ride home today.

I am creating...plans to finally get busy with the turquoise creation that's been busy in my head since the beads "found" me in Toronto.

I am going...to relax tomorrow after the go, go, going of the weekend and "road-tripping."

I am reading...(finishing) Conversations with God (1) and looking forward to beginning Book 2 - still finding time for John and Abigail :-) and escaping through A Year in This World ~ also have the last Twilight book waiting for me :-).

I am hoping...that Hannah has an incredible few days at camp and a great trip back to Ohio; that we have a wonderful 4th of July celebration at Mom's.

I am hearing...the wind rustle the blinds at the windows ~ so nice to have them open and feel/smell the fresh air!

Oh, I have been busy "playing with the beads" lately ~ always designing, creating, "playing" away...the problem arises in that I'm one of those right-brain individuals who finds such joy, passion, and sheer delight in the creative process that once I'm done....well, to be honest, it truly takes a swift personal self-kick in the seat (or at least a good wake-up call to the left-side of my brain!) to get "the rest of the story!"

You see, once the jewelry is "created" there's still the pricing, the photographing, the editing of photographs, the listing and descriptions to be written (well, at least that part can spark my right side again). Suffice it to say, sometimes, I'll get a stockpile of finished items due to my inevitable procrastination with this necessary left-brain activity. Consider this my personal confession...wish I could tell you'll do better in the future, but I know better...but I will give you a sneak peak at what will be showing up soon! Pics are done - just need to work on listings, etc...it will get done! :-)

Outside my window...bright summer morning sunshine is streaming in, promising a glorious day.

I am thinking...of Andrew and hoping that his PCV training film project is going well ~ looking forward to hearing more about it today when we hopefully chat.

From the kitchen...we are keeping it "simple" after a weekend of eating out with friends and family :-)

Hannah came back from France with over 500 incredible photographs - relax...I won't be posting them all here - but I have to say, for a 16-year-old amateur photographer (and yes, as her mother), she has an incredible "eye." From the kitchen...my oldest and dearest friend is in the midst of packing - boxes for here and for a cross-country (literally) move.

I am wearing...NOT my pj's (ha!!) believe it or not, but am dressed for a day of exploring and enjoying the city.

I am creating...finally got the alcohol inks, etc. and the grooved glass squares arrived before I arrived - now need to find time to "play" when I get back home.

I am going...to finally meet a dear friend who've I known for two years but have never seen - yes, indeed! An exciting day!

I am reading...Conversations with God (1) and am amazed...still enjoying John Adams and also enjoying A Year in This World.

I am hoping...that Hannah's flight home tomorrow is safe and uneventful - as is Nancy and Didier's, her dear chaperones; that Mom has some cheery "Abby-fixes" :-) - those smiles and coos are so good for the soul; that I don't get too terribly lost navigating Toronto today ;-).

I am hearing...distant city sounds, but pleasant morning quiet - children playing outside.

Around the house...I am ready for Hannah's homecoming - settled and ready for the busy summer ahead.

One of my favorite things...giving "soccer girl" her first big hug when she comes off the plane tomorrow night - I have missed her much.

I'm sitting in the breakfast nook of my childhood friend, the woman who has known me the longest in my life - save any family member - and still calls me "dear friend," gazing out the window at a hummingbird easily skip from one pink blossom to the next on the unnamed bush outside. The courtyard urban garden is lush in this early Toronto summer and the smell of lilacs is strong and heady, so wonderful.

It has been a beautiful day - warm and sunny - and full - of conversation, friendship, reminiscing, good food, window shopping, fun finds, and new mantras to ponder and hold close...

Embrace change.
Walk, but don't run.
Remember...
We need people who know all of us, not just a part of us.
Keep calm; carry on.

It has been a good trip.

A couple of "treats" to share - one for the eyes and one for the mind or the soul...

First, an Etsy treasury I created "in honor" of Dad's love for glads....entitled "4 the Glad man" (Pastor Ann's message at his Celebration of Life Service was aptly titled, "The Glad Man"). Such beautiful flowers were just a small part of his legacy - the field is planted with only a fraction this summer of what he would usually do, but when the blooms arise, we will remember him.

Second, Andrew updated his blog recently and has been painfully, inspiringly honest about his journey and experience, especially in light of the recent challenges. I know that I found it especially meaningful and also motivating - hope you might as well.

I am wearing...my robe (early morning run out for a quick car repair and now back to hit the shower!)

I am creating...did some "dumpster diving" at the bead shop this weekend and am eager to identify my finds with help from my online pals :-) and get designing with these.

I am going...Goodwill Hunting TODAY - woo-hoo!

I am reading...just finished a pure indulgence (Mary Higgens Clark - think I've read everything she's written..LOL!) and still working on John Adams - a wonderful read.

I am hoping...that Hannah's week of finals go well for her, that I make it across the border without too much angst (oops!), that Hannah has an incredible, life-remembering trip to France this week, that Mom has a wonderful time with us in Canada.

I am hearing...the sound of distant thunder.

FINDING MY WAY

Anyone who knows me well can attest to my complete lack of direction. Yes, I am "directionally-challenged." Do not tell me, "Go north" or "head west" unless you want me to roam aimlessly for hours. I need specifics - turn left at the 3rd light after the stop sign.

Yet, when left to my own devices and travelling alone, if I do wander off course, I usually don't feel any angst or great anxiety, any great need to immediately turn around. Instead, I'll just keep going and see where the new road takes me, winding through a new journey and generally still arriving at my destination, although a little later than planned.

There is a notepad on the nightstand by my bed which is imprinted with the words, "Your life is the journey." Sometimes the journey may be filled with details and specifics, and sometimes it may just be open roads. Yet, the journey is what life is all about - and living that journey wherever it takes you. Forget the GPS...follow your heart on the next road trip - just watch out for the bumps in the road. :-)

DESIGNING WOMEN - You, Too, Can Be Julia!

Julia Sugarbaker was always my favorite among the incredible Designing Women team. I admired her ability to master the English language in the face of any situation with such grace, such satire, and such tongue-in-cheek (or not!) skill.

Here's a look at Julia in action...

In celebration of Designing Women's First Season being released to DVD today, NPR's "monkey see" site has made it possible for you to experience "becoming Julia" by creating your own "Julia Rant." Based on the MadLibs game, this exercise is great fun for any fans of Ms. Sugarbaker. Enjoy!

The resulting "rant" is Julia's response to Monday night's new episode of "The Bachelorette." Here's what my Julia has to say!

I would rather spend two hours sharing pigs in a blanket with John Dillinger than watch a woman who apparently purchased her intellect at Kmart for two cents chase twenty-five men with biceps made of copper and heads packed with Rice Krispies.

Because when future generations look upon what we have left for them, which may by then be little more than global warming and millions of non-biodegradable Ipods, I fear they will conclude that they would have welcomed bread and circuses if only they had realized the alternative was pork rinds and Jon & Kate Plus 8.

[sits down and crosses arms, but then immediately stands back up]

And let me tell you a little something about romance: Handing out roses like you are a mascot throwing peanut M & M’s to the assembled hooligans at a soccer game is not my idea of romance. Romance is a man who knows the difference between John Adams and John Travolta and who is capable of putting on a necktie without scratching his head as if he is connecting a DVD without the instruction manual.

So do not ask yourself why I do not particularly enjoy a television show where the assembled male candidates represent romantic prospects inferior to the workers on the night shift at the Applebee’s in Savannah. Ask yourself whether, after a lifetime playing with a cultural Playstation and dancing on the grave of Mr. Darcy, you will ever...recover...your dignity.

WHERE HAS IT GONE?

I have been seriously AWOL the last six weeks or so due to life, etc. (as those closest to me understand) and from my sporadic posts you've been able to ascertain some of the significant changes ~ your comments, cyber hugs, thoughts and prayers have been appreciated.

But as I face a rapidly approaching end of May and beginning of June, I ask, goodness, where did spring go? Summer will be upon me before I know it ~ "soccer girl" has less than two weeks left of school and leaves immediately for a "whirlwind" trip to Paris with my sister and brother-in-law....alas, leaving me behind, LOL! She is counting down the days and trying desperately to stay focused on these final days of classes, finals, and yes, still soccer, having made the final ODP pool for the state team. It is most hard for me to believe that in a few short days she will "officially" be a senior in high school -- that makes me ask, "Where has it gone?" indeed!

I am trying to refocus and re-center my energies in my jewelry ~ my muse and motivation took a hiatus as well these last few weeks which was to be expected, I suppose. I am busy again,

Outside my window...sunshine is streaming, a hopeful spring Monday...

I am thinking...of my Dad, of Hannah, of Mom, and how my life circles and journeys ahead.

From the learning room...are a couple of wire and beading books waiting for me.

From the kitchen...will be Hannah's "last meal" request before her surgery :-)...whoops, "no nose, Mom!" :).

I am wearing...my pj's still...

I am creating...played with alcohol inks this past week with Ellen and am "hooked" so will be anxious to get some new materials and "play" again.

I am going...to be sticking close to home as Hannah recuperates.

I am reading...not enough - too much "life" interrupting and need to get back to the stack...

I am hoping...that Mom feels better today, that Hannah's surgery goes well with a quick recovery, that Dad's spirit is abounding as the glads are planted this week...

Around the house...Hannah and I are organizing chores...again... ;P

One of my favorite things...will be my weekly "phone date" with Andrew, arranged now so that I should no longer just hear funky Tanzanian music when I call...

planting glads; helping Hannah recuperate - plans include a Harry Potter marathon and much studying - exams soon after she returns (!!); much needed Abby fixes; watching soccer games maybe - but NOT having a player this weekend; hopefully our traditional Memorial Day summer kick-off cookout

Outside my window...the morning is cloudy, warm and green...

I am thinking...of my Dad, of how quickly the loss occurred - just a week ago he was still with us as we waited for a miracle.

From the learning room...not sure I'm ready for moving forward yet.

From the kitchen...lots of left-overs still with Mom so we'll be sharing I'm sure for a few days.

I am wearing...my pj's, of course.

I am creating...waiting for my muse to return after grief is finished with me.

I am going...to take Hannah and friend to ODP state pool training this week, trying to get back in routines.

I am reading...

I am hoping...that Dad knows how much he is missed and how much I will always love him.

I am hearing..."Dad's Jazz," the compilation of wonderful jazz standards that were playing before and after his service on Saturday.

Around the house...there should be enough to do to keep me busy.

One of my favorite things...was seeing Dad's legacy ~ family and friends gather from all over the country to celebrate his life.

In the final weeks of his life, Dad raised the question many times about joining the FB community. After all, there was a growing number of family members regularly posting updates, photos, and communicating with each other, and most recently, he had received an invitation from a Glad World friend asking him to join FB so that Dad might see his gladiolas. I mean, how could he resist such temptation?

Now the discussion among family members about the prospect of Dad on FB was filled with humor. While he was incredibly talented in his professional career, Dad had always been "technologically-challenged." When Scotts first issued computers to its sales team and sent its managers for corporate training, Dad returned, proudly proclaiming that he had learned a great deal about his "calculator." Dad's running jokes about his computer knowledge generally centered on one of these two - "How many 'K's' does it have?" or "You probably just need some more 'K's.'"

Dad's struggle with change and consumer advancements became the basis of family mythology, with the stories truly being more fact than myth. His first experience with a drive-through fast-food restaurant was at the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Marysville, a carload of children giving food requests to Mom with Mom providing a summary of the order to Dad. Suddenly a scratchy voice called out, "Welcome to KFC, may I take your order?" There was a very pregnant pause, Dad began to stutter quietly, then more loudly, and finally shouted, "CHICKEN!"

And then, of course, there was the everlasting "clicker" problem. The TV clickers, the cable box clicker - and of course, different "clickers" for the bedroom TV because it used a different setup...."Lois, what channel is MSNBC again?"

That's right, Dad needed Mom to watch TV...Dad needed Mom for most everything, and they made a terrific team. Several years ago Dad was named editor of Glad World, the bulletin of the NAGC (North American Gladiola Council). Editor? What a wonderful job and title for a "closet writer"! Well, just a bit of a "hitch" when Dad discovered that as editor he had to completely prepare the 50-80 page magazine type publication for the printer each time - yes, he would need to use a "calculator" aka computer, word processing program, and wait, oh, no, graphics program. "Lois....!" A few years later the NAGC dutifully named Dad and Mom co-editors of the bulletin. Dad continued to do all the writing and proofreading; Mom did a wonderful job with layout and print preparation.

So, Dad on Facebook? Well, it could have happened....

Of course, Mom would have to log Dad in every time as even if he could have finally figured out how to operate the "calculator," he would have become lost immediately as he always referred to FB as "Spacebook."

All of you would have been his "friends."

His status often would have read "Jack G. Welch is relaxing in the recliner watching Y & R after a morning of working on the glads."

His groups would have been Family and Friends of Peace Corps Volunteers, My Pond is Bigger than Your Pond, Gladiolus Flowers, English Bulldogs Rock!, All of You Who Love Jazz, One Day My Stamp and Baseball Card Collections Will Pay for My Great-Grandchildren's College Education, Body Surfing, Union County Democrats, and I will make an excellent curmudgeony old person (yes, that is a real FB group).

He would be a fan of MSNBC, The Young and the Restless, The History Channel, Keith Olberman, Ice Road Truckers, Survivor, the Cleveland Indians, and The Vicar of Dibley.

His favorite applications would be Pass a Drink, Lil Green Patch, Mafia (which he would have already won by now),weRead, and I think we all know what the answer would be if he took the quiz "What Swear Word Are You?"

He would, undoubtedly, post the most profound notes for all of us to read - to make us laugh, to make us think, to make us cringe, to make us remember him.

Finally, he would have the most fun changing his profile picture often. But always, it would have Mom by his side, as she has been, every step of the way.

SAYING GOODBYE

Yesterday was Dad's birthday. It was also the day that he passed peacefully, albeit painfully for us, from this earth...even at the end "calling the shots" on his own, just as he had always lived his life.

Here are some "goodbyes," Dad, from your beloved family...

From me....thinking of "Moonlight in Vermont," beautiful gladiola gardens, adorable English bulldogs, driving through big cities while lying down in the station wagon & listening to Italian cursing in heavy traffic, percussion brushes keeping time on the steering wheel to Benny Goodman, stale PEEPS, king of body surfing, pumpkins, Jeeps...the best Dad ever. Happy Birthday, Dad - I will always love you, will always remember.

From niece Lindsey...happy birthday grandpa; we all love you so much, you've given us the greatest gift of all. How many people can say they were born again on their birthday?

From granddaughter Sarah...I love you Guck and you will always be my hero.

From great niece Anne...I sip a Bloody Mary through a rough-edged black straw bits of horseradish gallop over my tastebuds and we pay homage, my vodka and I while the leafy green of the celery tickles my cheek like a kiss from you and your scratchy face and you smile through the bartender’s mischievous grin as I inhale, only air bubbles and sporadic drips of cold water cool my burning eyes.

Outside my window...the evening is dark and warm, a quiet spring night.

I am thinking...of my Dad, of "the flood of memories" as Sarah said earlier today that fill my heart as I pray either for peaceful release or for a miracle...

From the learning room...no time this week for anything "formal."

From the kitchen...a hodge-podge of leftovers from a soccer tournament weekend and baptism open house...snacks, fruit and vegetable trays, Gatorade and granola...

I am wearing...my MHS soccer sweats and a red T-shirt.

I am creating...not much right now as "the muse" and time are challenging me...

I am going...to make a lot of trips to Columbus this week and have a trip to Indiana planned for the weekend ~ we'll see.

I am reading..."John Adams," ~ but in all honesty, concentration is difficult.

I am hoping...that miracles really do still happen.

I am hearing...nothing - sweet, sweet silence.

Around the house...things are peacefully settled.

One of my favorite things...will be welcoming Ellen for her visit.

Outside my window...the morning hides behind an early, dark, and rainy beginning to the week.

I am thinking...of how Dad is doing and his test today, of Hannah's busy soccer week ahead.

From the learning room..."The Artist's Life" has been buried and needs to resurface.

From the kitchen...depending on how things go at the hospital today, it may be a good evening for a simple supper at home here with Mom ~ may put together something in the crockpot before heading to the hospital this morning.

I am wearing...still my pj's as I ease into my morning before the week takes off at a break-neck pace.

I am creating...a custom bracelet and Abby's heirloom bracelet.

I am going...to ODP state training every week now for Hannah (lots of driving, but well worth the trips!).

I am reading..."John Adams," ~ a terrific biography.

I am hoping...Dad had a restful night and that the test today provides definitive answers/solutions.

I am hearing...Hannah get ready for school and the beginning of her busy week...April showers & showers & showers!

Around the house..."recover from spring break" week. :-)

ROAD EATS!

Thelma and Louise traveled 2913+ miles in just over 11 days for this unforgettable mother-daughter celebration, spring break, college visit craze, mega-trek. They would not have survived had it not been for the sustenance of certain road trip food, those special "road eats," reserved for journeys such as these. Here are "the girls'" favorites...

Nutter Butter cookies
Cheez-It Crackers (although Thelma discovered too late that these do not travel well when tossing items carelessly into the back seat onto the snack bag....)
pretzel sticks (a favorite of Louise's - although Thelma was known to have indulged occasionally when desperate for something different...)
Sour Patch Kids (Thelma introduced these to Louise on the trip - while Louise had tried them previously she never developed a palate for them until this excursion....Louise must admit they are quite good and yes, she did enjoy the sweet yet very sour taste and texture ~ yet, she still is not sure she would ever choose to eat them outside of a long car trip with Thelma).
Coffee - Louise's drink of choice (usually a morning drink only, but became a day-long requirement during the drives) - first choice was always Starbucks, but Louise usually would have to settle for BP.
Mocha LOCO - Thelma's drink of choice to help keep Louise awake (Louise is usually not supportive of Thelma indulging in energy boosting drinks, but under the circumstances and given the alternative - i.e. car swerving off the side of a mountain - Louise thought it probably was better to have Thelma more on the extra alert and talkative side).

Of course, there were plenty of other "special" eats along the way - dinners not to be forgotten, seafood that is always savored, the best Key Lime Pie in Florida (Hemingways' - Pensacola), checking out calamari here and there to determine favorite spots, and revisiting gator bites once again.

All of this gourmandization was bound to lead to another road trip memory...."best belch" (or perhaps, Thelma will remember it as "foulest belch") -- after dinner at Hemingways'....somewhere along Highway 10 on the way back to Tallahassee, yes, Thelma let it out and then groaned softly complaining that the burp 'tasted like' lobster bisque, calamari, and Sour Patch Kids...hmmmm, yum-oh!

ANSWERS ALONG THE WAY

Thelma and Louise were faced with many questions throughout this journey ~ how long does it take to get to Ruby Falls? where will Thelma go college and what will she do with the rest of her life? how has Louise survived this long with no sense of direction and no concept of distance?

But these real burning questions were answered along the way...

Who is Crazy Ed?

1st, Crazy Ed is most likely the proprietor behind this unforgettable establishment along I-75 in southern Tennessee. Thelma and Louise had remembered Crazy Ed's from previous journeys along the road, but were determined this trip to "track down" the actual establishment and document its existence. They were successful.

Thelma and Louise did not actually have the opportunity to meet the proprietor of Crazy Ed's...no doubt, fortunately.

2nd, Crazy Ed is the name that Thelma affectionately gave to the Tom-Tom GPS unit which provided assistance to the girls along the way. Thelma had great fun with Crazy Ed when she discovered that she could record her own voice - Southern Comfort style - giving directions...."heads up, Uncle Jim, when you get your Tom-Tom back!"

Where is Raccoon Valley Road?

Another memory of the girls from previous trips, Thelma and Louise confirmed that Raccoon Valley Road is located in Tennessee, logically not too far from Crazy Ed's. It would make sense.

Where can one get the BEST fruit smoothie?

Sonic Drive-in ~ Sweetwater, TN....Thelma and Louise discovered this at midnight the first day of their trip, confirming it the following morning. Wanting to see if their theory was indeed true (or if all Sonic smoothies were the same), the girls did check smoothies in the Florida Panhandle (too sugary and not blended well) and in Nelsonville, Ohio (a close second, but no cigar). Sweetwater, Tennessee Sonic Drive-In -- it's worth the trip.

A LITTLE ROAD MUSIC

A little road music...one might think it would be a simple matter ~ something to help pass the many miles, to keep the energy of the journey going, to provide some tempo and rhythm to the trek...but ahh, yes, with Thelma and Louise, the battle of the MP3's was an interesting one.

Now it should be noted that for the most part Louise does enjoy Thelma's music and if one were to do a side-by-side comparison of playlists of the two MP3's, one would find numerous duplications - that can be a good thing on a road trip where compatibility is important. However, it should be noted that the one area of music that Louise struggles to accept is rap and...you guessed it, Thelma is a big fan of the genre.

So, you can imagine the scene when Thelma announcea that she has the perfect song for playing as the two of us are rolling through the state of Georgia and Louise begins to hear the beautiful strains of Ray Charles singing, "Georgia on My Mind." "Oh, Thelma," I exclaim, "you don't know how much I love this so..." My words are cut short by the booming beat and words that follow - wait, that's not Ray....what is this? Thelma begins laughing and explains, "Isn't it cool, Louise? It's Field Mob (Louise thinks any group called Field Mob is not a good start...) and they use that old song all the way through but it's so much better. (Louise thinks...better?)

So, rolling through Georgia, Field Mob it is....and several times in Florida - and yes, we hear it again in South Carolina and I'm pretty sure I hear it again today in North Carolina at one point as well.....don't tell, Thelma, but it is kinda growing on me.
